Using a core drill or a hole saw is an efficient method to form a hole, as only a small proportion of the material removed is actually cut (as opposed to a drill bit), with the material removed, the core being discarded at the end. The terminology *cut* correctly applies only to certain types of cutter & material, and in general terms, materials which form a chip are cut, and materials that do not are ground away. Examples of this differential as as follows :

Metals, plastics, woods fibreboards - are cut

Masonry, stone, porcelain tiles & glass - are ground

To help you make the right choice, we can advise you of the most suitable hole saw or core drill, depending on the variety of factors that exist within your job and application.
